Be careful of who you trust!

NannyThe question that should be at the forefront of your mind when considering hiring a Caregiver should be, “Can I trust this person?”. One way you can find out is by running a simple background check to find out!  Knowing if a caregiver has had a prior conviction for any medical related or any serious criminal violation can seriously impact your decision.

You have the right to ask any person that you are considering for this position to consent to a background check. A background check will tell you things like, “Has this person worked or lived under any other names or addresses?”, “Are they a sex offender?” “Have they had any felonies?” We can even let you know if any person, or organization has been in any trouble for healthcare related issues. Will this person be driving your loved ones around? Check their driving record! You are trusting these potential Caregivers to take care of your family, and it is up to you to make sure you are placing that trust with the right people.

Here are some other important things to note before hiring a Caregiver:

  1. Make sure your renter’s or homeowner’s insurance covers household employees.  Ensure that it states it covers employee’s accidents.
  2. Ensure you know all legal information pertaining to tax.
  3. Individual states will have their own mandates as well.  Such as paying a state or tax disability tax.
  4. Ensure an Employment Eligibility Verification Form I-9 is filled out and a record kept.

No matter what you choose to do making sure you have a good relationship with your home care provider is very important.  Put time into knowing your applicants and choose carefully.
